“We are proposing an exciting mixed use development that will include a new public square, Tesco store, housing, new shops, community facilities and road improvements designed to revitalise New Barnet Town Centre and act as a catalyst for further investment in the area.”
New Barnet Development Plans
Asda have bought the gasworks site on Albert Road, New Barnet. So far they have not released any details of their proposed development, consulted with local residents or submitted any planning application.

Tesco submitted a planning application for a Tesco Express in Victoria Road, this was rejected by the Council’s Planning Department.

Tesco have now said they want to build a store on East Barnet Road, opposite Sainsbury’s.

Their letter to local residents contained the following paragraph:-
“Tesco have recently held a ‘consultation’ about their plans for the Victoria Rd/East Barnet Road triangle.   It was about what they want to offer, not what the community needs.  Not surprisingly, they said that a Tesco store was the one essential element of their proposals.

None of the Tesco representatives was taking notes about what they were told.   And their survey had just two loaded questions:
- Do you support the principle of regeneration for New Barnet town centre?
- Would you like to see more public space in your town centre?

They could have added, do you like it when people are nice to you?  Who is going to say no to these questions?

Lots of residents tell us they are concerned about these proposals.  Some of them have set up a website at www.newbarnet.org.uk
